Adult & Juvenile Atlantic Spotted Dolphin with a Alpha Adult Bodyguard in the background giving heavy stink-eye.
24 miles off Cape Hatteras over the "Proteus" wreck, I had the honour of swimming with this pod of 30-40 dolphins for over 45 minutes. Seconds after this image was taken, the Alpha Adult came within inches from my mask, shaking its head violently in all directions. As I adjusted the lens for a close-up, it circled me twice with lightning speed then jumped out of the water and whacked me with its tail. I balled up into a tight fetal position with the camera over my privates and braced for the impact which would have caused my intestines to come out of my mouth and rectum. The fatal blow never came. The Alpha Adult spared my life with just a slap, as if saying "Time for you to be on your way".
